Frequently Asked Questions
Is a gastroscopy painful?expand_more
A gastroscopy shouldn't be painful, though you may feel some discomfort or bloating as the camera passes through and air is used to get a clear view. Most patients find it easier than they expected, especially with sedation or throat spray to help.
Will I be awake during the procedure?expand_more
That's your choice. With throat spray alone, you'll stay fully awake and can go home and drive shortly afterwards. With sedation, you'll feel drowsy and relaxed, and you may not remember much of the procedure, but you'll need someone to take you home. General anaesthetic is rarely required for this procedure.
How long does a gastroscopy take?expand_more
The procedure itself typically takes around 10 minutes, though you should allow longer for your overall visit to include preparation and recovery time.
Can I drive home afterwards?expand_more
Yes, if you only had throat spray. If you had sedation, you won't be able to drive for at least 24 hours, so you'll need a responsible adult to take you home.
Will I need a biopsy?expand_more
Not always - it depends on what we find. If a biopsy is needed, small tissue samples are taken painlessly during the procedure itself and sent for analysis.
