Many people experience symptoms such as bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, or stomach pain, but don’t always understand what is causing them. While these symptoms can be common, they may sometimes be linked to underlying conditions, which we’ll be exploring in this month’s blog.

What is IBS?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that affects how your gut functions. It does not cause damage to the bowel, but it can lead to symptoms that come and go over time.

Common symptoms of IBS include:
• Bloating and abdominal discomfort
• Diarrhoea, constipation, or a mixture of both
• Stomach cramps that may improve after going to the toilet

IBS is often linked to factors such as diet, stress, and changes in gut sensitivity. Although it can affect quality of life, it is not considered a serious condition and does not increase the risk of bowel cancer.

What is IBD?

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a term used to describe conditions such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Unlike IBS, IBD involves ongoing inflammation in the digestive tract and can cause damage to the bowel.

Common symptoms of IBD include:
• Persistent diarrhoea
• Blood or mucus in your stool
• Unexplained weight loss
• Fatigue and feeling unwell
• Abdominal pain

IBD is a long-term condition that often requires medical treatment and monitoring. Surgery is not the main treatment for these conditions, but there is a role for surgery in certain situations.

What’s the difference?

Although IBS and IBD can have similar symptoms, there are some key differences:

• IBS affects how the gut works and doesn’t damage the bowel, while IBD causes inflammation and damage
• IBS does not cause bleeding or weight loss, whereas IBD can
• IBD is usually more serious and requires medical treatment

When should I seek help?
