Colorectal cancer surveillance

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will my follow-up last?expand_more

Usually up to five years after treatment. Colonoscopy checks may continue for longer, depending on what is found.

What does a raised CEA level mean?expand_more

It does not always mean the cancer has come back. Smoking and some other conditions can raise CEA, so we usually repeat the test or arrange a scan.

Why do I need a colonoscopy if my cancer has been removed?expand_more

New polyps and, occasionally, new cancers can develop elsewhere in the bowel. Colonoscopy finds and removes polyps early and checks the area where the bowel was joined.

I was treated elsewhere. Can you take over my follow-up?expand_more

Yes. We will need your treatment summary, scan reports and pathology results, and we will keep your existing team and GP informed.

What symptoms should I report between appointments?expand_more

Bleeding from the back passage, a lasting change in bowel habit, unexplained weight loss, abdominal pain or swelling, and unusual tiredness. Contact us rather than waiting for your next review.
