IBD surveillance

Frequently Asked Questions

I've had colitis for over 8 years and never had a surveillance colonoscopy. Should I?expand_more

Very likely, yes, unless your colitis has only ever affected the rectum. Please speak to us or your IBD team.

What is dysplasia?expand_more

Precancerous changes in the cells lining the bowel. Most dysplasia found at surveillance can be removed during colonoscopy. Occasionally, surgery is advised.

Why do you use dye spray?expand_more

A harmless blue dye sprayed onto the bowel lining makes small, flat areas of dysplasia easier to see, so they are less likely to be missed.

Can I have the test during a flare?expand_more

It is best done when your colitis is settled, as inflammation can hide subtle changes. If you are flaring, we may delay the test until it is under control.

When does surveillance stop?expand_more

There is no fixed age. From around 75, we discuss with you whether continuing still offers a benefit, taking your general health into account.
