Polyp surveillance
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I need a colonoscopy every few years for life?expand_more
No. Many people need only one surveillance test. Surveillance usually stops around age 75, or sooner if the benefit becomes small.
I was told years ago to have a colonoscopy every 5 years. Is that still right?expand_more
Possibly not. UK guidelines changed in 2020, and many people previously on regular surveillance no longer need it. We can review your history and advise.
My last colonoscopy was elsewhere. Can you plan my follow-up?expand_more
Yes. Send us the report and polyp results and we will advise whether, and when, you need a further test.
My polyp was hyperplastic. Do I need follow-up?expand_more
Small hyperplastic polyps in the rectum carry very little risk and do not usually need surveillance. Larger or right-sided serrated polyps may, so we will check your results.
What are the risks of a surveillance colonoscopy?expand_more
The same small risks as any colonoscopy, including bleeding and, rarely, a tear in the bowel wall. The risk is slightly higher when polyps are removed.
