Frequently Asked Questions
Will I be awake during my colonoscopy?expand_more
You can choose to have the procedure with sedation, with gas and air (Entonox), or with neither. Most patients manage well without sedation, and many choose to stay awake throughout. General anaesthetic is only used for this procedure in specific circumstances. Your doctor will discuss this with you if it is relevant to you.
How long does bowel preparation take?expand_more
Preparation starts a week before your procedure (stopping iron tablets), with dietary changes from 3 days before, and the main bowel-cleansing solution taken the day before your appointment.
Is a colonoscopy painful?expand_more
Most people feel pressure, bloating, or mild cramping rather than pain, and sedation or gas and air is available if you'd like additional help staying comfortable.
What happens if a polyp is found?expand_more
Small polyps can usually be removed straightaway during the procedure. Larger polyps may only be biopsied at the time, with removal arranged at a further visit.
How soon can I go back to work?expand_more
Most patients can return to work the next day. If your procedure is in the afternoon, we'd advise waiting until the second day after your test.
